family
Justin hails from a very wealthy aristocratic family in north central England. His father, Jeremiah Fletchley, inherited a large mining business that guaranteed his family comfort and stability. His mother, Andrea Finch, also came from a rich family; Jeremiah and Andrea were betrothed when they were only seven years old. Luckily, they had known each other for a long time and were good friends before they grew to love each other as husband and wife.

Justin's family had no idea that their son had magical tendencies until the letter from Hogwarts was delivered to them via owl post. At first, the idea of their son having this strange ability was a hard one to accept for Jeremiah and Andrea, but they slowly became accustomed to the idea, especially since it seemed to give Justin a distinguished air that was different from his peers. (Also, Andrea loved Gilderoy Lockhart's books.)

Justin also has one brother, Erick, who is seven years younger. He has spent the last year at Hogwarts after discovering he, too, was a wizard.


history
Justin was down for the prestigious Eton College before the letter addressed with green ink came that fateful day. When he opened this letter, a whole new world with brand new possibilities opened as well. As he started his journey into the Wizarding world, he carefully felt his way through to find his place. This was not helped by the fact that in his second year, speculation about the "Heir of Slytherin" flew around, complete with the fact that this so-called Heir targeted Muggle-borns just like Justin. In fact, poor Justin was Petrified by a creature later discovered to be a basilisk, lurking deep within the chambers of the school.

This Petrification resulted in the missing of most of Justin's second year at Hogwarts, and as such, he has spent quite a bit of time trying to catch up. This constant struggle to keep up, compounded with his parents' distrust and confusion about this 'other life' he led (especially after the basilisk incident) resulted in some tumultous years to follow. His parents were grooming their eldest son to follow in his father's footsteps, which Justin grew to resent. He had seen the possibilities that lay in the Wizarding world, and when the time came to think of what he would like to do once he left his school, he knew that whatever ideas he had were not what his parents had in store for him.

When the second war broke out, shortly after Justin's fifth year began, Justin resolved to be as informed as possible -- by joining Dumbledore's Army, taking out a subscription to the Daily Prophet (which, at first, strongly influenced his opinion of his schoolmate Harry Potter), and relaying this information to his parents at home - prime targets for Lord Voldemort, as Muggles. Jeremiah and Andrea didn't seem to think much of Justin's correspondence, and this turned out to be their downfall.

In the summer between Justin's sixth and seventh year (as Justin was still trying to decide whether to return to the school, after the events that had transpired in early June), Jeremiah and Andrea went on a business trip and never returned. Justin assumed the worst - it was later reported that a popular stopover to their destination was seen burning, with the Dark Mark overhead. Now Justin is left to fend for his younger brother on his own. With the loss of his parents, Justin has a renewed drive for honing his magical skills; he must do whatever he can to avenge their memory (no matter what issues he may have had with them, he still loved and respected them), and protect their children, himself included.


personality
Even though he harbours a deep distrust of all Slytherins in general (and some deep emnity for one Draco Malfoy), Justin could easily have been a Slytherin himself; he has the wealth and the ambition. The stigma attached to his Muggle-born status is the only thing that stopped him from becoming one - even the Sorting Hat said so. Before his parents' disappearance, Justin was easily swayed by any strong influence, leading him to believe Harry Potter was the Heir of Slytherin in his second year (for a time) and all the rumours spread in his fifth year about his schoolmate. Usually, Justin finds the 'right' thing to believe after being presented with the facts -- this has contributed to his newfound deep respect for Harry.

As a Hufflepuff, Justin is known to be loyal and hard-working; in fact, Justin worked harder than most of his peers to make up for the majority of his second year he spent Petrified. He didn't make it into many NEWT level classes, but Justin believes that if he had progressed normally like the rest of his classmates, he would have achieved much higher OWLs. He is generally civil to most people; he only has a few close friends at Hogwarts, mostly his housemates in his grade. Of these people, he is extremely overprotective. He is known to be defensive (a trait that developed over the years, especially with his differences with his parents) and can be easily angered, if provoked. Especially these days, Justin finds it hard to control his underlying anger, resentment, guilt, and frustration with the world. Generally speaking, though, if you don't give Justin any problems, he won't give you any, either.

Justin has a slight rebellious streak and can be stubborn when he believes he is right, but the part of him governed by reason will try and assess both sides of a situation. However, when emotion clouds his judgement, he can be hypocritical and illogical.
